James M. Cain on his masterpiece "Double Indemnity"

I make no conscious effort to be tough, or hard-boiled, or grim, or any of the things I am usually called. I merely try to write as the character would write, and I never forget that the average man, from the fields, the streets, the bars, the offices, and even the gutters of his country, has acquired a vividness of speech that goes beyond anything I could invent, and that if I stick to this heritage, this logos of the American countryside, I shall attain a maximum of effectiveness with very little effort.

Tony Soprano on Gary Cooper

Let me tell ya something. Nowadays, everybody's gotta go to shrinks, and counselors, and go on "Sally Jessy Raphael" and talk about their problems. What happened to Gary Cooper? The strong, silent type. That was an American. He wasn't in touch with his feelings. He just did what he had to do. See, what they didn't know was once they got Gary Cooper in touch with his feelings that they wouldn't be able to shut him up! And then it's dysfunction this, and dysfunction that, and dysfunction vaffancul!

Is Singh not the King anymore ?

Let me tell you some incidents in the recent Indian political history, you may or may not have heard about them, but those incidents did influence the 21st century of India. It would be a non-linear narration.

*****

Scene 8
NDA lose the elections in 2004, Congress party makes big gains. Sonia Gandhi, as told by media 'sacrifices' the post of Prime Minister and Manmohan Singh is asked to lead the country. But, some say that the then President Abdul Kalam spoiled Sonia Gandhi's plans and there was no sacrifice but only a scapegoat who would be sacrificed. National media recollects Manmohan Singh's liberal economic policies and suggests that this would be an important chapter in Indian history, it was an important chapter but for other reasons.

Scene 3
After the death of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Sikh genocide followed when Rajiv Gandhi was the Prime Minister of India. By the end of 1980's the exponential rise of BJP and other regional parties had made sure that Congress had to rely on other political forces unlike the monopoly which it enjoyed for many decades.

Scene 1
Indira Gandhi is studiously taking forward her father's legacy of Socialism and in the mean time, there was a silent revolution which started inf few parts of the country. Subramanian Swamy proposes his liberal ideas on how to improve the Indian Economy and not surprisingly there are hardly any takers in the Congress party and Indira Gandhi referred to Subramanian Swamy as 'Santa Claus with unrealistic ideas'.

Queen's Kitchen Cabinet and other thoughts

“Let this be stated upfront. Muslims need not be apologetic at all in demanding a law positively biased towards them when it comes to the issue of targeted violence”
The above quote is by National Advisory Council (NAC) member Farah Naqvi on the Communal Violence Bill (CVB) proposed by the NAC, headed by Sonia Gandhi.

During the pre-emergency and emergency days, Indira Gandhi had close associates and advisers who used to take part in making important decisions over the functioning of the Government, it was called "Kitchen Cabinet". The "Kitchen Cabinet" was accused of favoring a family instead of country. The "Kitchen Cabinet" had ministers, bureaucrats and 'family members'. The family members who are not part of Government took crucial decisions and had to face questions from other quarters. Indira Gandhi's "Kitchen Cabinet" is history. But the foundations for Dynasty politics that were firmly laid continue to go strong even today. It should not come as a surprise that the current Government has its own "Kitchen Cabinet".

The National Advisory Council (NAC) headed by Sonia Gandhi is the "Kitchen Cabinet" of the UPA (or) of the Congress to be precise. There are some differences between the Kitchen Cabinet of the 1970's and the present one.
  • Most of the members of the Kitchen Cabinet are not ministers or bureaucrats.
  • Kitchen Cabinet does not report to the Prime Minister.
  • The 70's Kitchen Cabinet mostly comprised of elected representatives and the current one majorly consists of self-styled social activists.
  • The 70's Kitchen Cabinet didn't exist legally, but the current one exists on papers.
