Enemy - Lurking around Darkness

"Enemy" by Denis Villeneuve starring Jake Gyllenhaal is one of the few films in recent years which sticks to its charm of darkness without overplaying the card of testing the viewer with the perplexed plot which reveals itself as the film progresses.

Denis Villeneuve manages to push me into this uncomfortable zone of darkness right from the beginning with the edifying and encapsulated screenplay assisted with cinematography which doesn't let your brain to escape from cramped space of murkiness.

The plot of the film looks perplexed, adds the beauty, but its the recurring theme of chaos which is the connotation of the film and arguably the pivotal part of the film. I was so mesmerized with the gloomy effect of the film that when I watched the film for the second time, I was thinking "How did I miss all these things".

After you place all the scenes in an order which makes sense to decrypt the meaning of the film, all the scenes will stand as an study for film buffs but its the remote effect which "Enemy" is able to perpetuate while watching it for the first time makes it one of the best psychological thrillers to come out in the recent years. If you wish, you can drill down "Enemy" to a film which exposes the volatile relationship between a husband and wife.

Spoilers, do not proceed if you haven't watched the film.

Analysis in one sentence:
Adam is the real one and Anthony is some kind of alter ego of himself.

Hints which helped me in coming to a conclusion of my above analysis.
  • Observe the scene where Adam/Anthony is about to enter an erotic show in an underground club, you can see Adam/Anthony is holding a key and the man behind who escorts him.
  • Adam/Anthony repeats the same history lesson a day after in the school.
  • Adam/Anthony's mother says "I think you should quit that fantasy of being a third rate movie actor."
  • When Adam/Anthony is escorted to his apartment when he doesn't have the keys.
  • Adam/Anthony's wife asks him "Did you have a good day at school?"
