Sita Sings the Blues and its dumbness

What do you expect when a fatuous bloke is given "Thus Spoke Zarathustra"?. The probability of him/her understanding even a couple of pages is null, same is with the liberal claques when it comes to literature. Recently, I heard that there was a minute controversy over screening of the animation film 'Sita Sings the Blues', it reminded me that this animated film was lying in my hard disk for a very long time along with other films and it took some time for me to unearth it.

The cardinal plot of the movie revolves around the epic 'Ramayana' and there is a parallel plot about the break up of a San Francisco couple. The story of 'Ramayana' is narrated with the help of three silhouettes puppets. After a montage the film title appears in English flavored Devanagari script followed by God Natraja dancing awkwardly, Lord Brahma with his four heads rotating and Goddess Lakshmi pressing the legs of Lord Vishnu. The puppets narrate the story of Ramayana by giving us some gyan like the demolition of Babri Masjid, time-period in which story of ramayana took place etc..,.
I wouldn't waste much time on this post, but would reveal what I have learned from this film.
  • Kaikeyi can be equated with a voluptuous nurse which we commonly see in online porn.
  • Ravana did only one mistake in his entire life, which is abducting Sita.
  • Soorpanaka entices Ravana by comparing the Sita’s bosoms with lotus flower.
  • Sita is a slave to Lord Rama.
  • Sita is a bloodthirsty women.
  • Lord Rama kicks Sita every now and then.
  • Lord Rama tramples on the pregnant stomach of Sita.
  • Lord Rama suspects that the fetus of Sita is from Ravana.
  • Few more….
Some see Hinduism as a religion, some see it as a way of life, some see it as a sprout for every generation and some see it as a sacred thing filled with good values. Above all I see it as a profound auspicious space filled with intellectual paradigms which helps human life in many ways, it even offers the liberty to amend laws (Manusmriti), gives rights for an individual to question the existence of God(Rig Veda), endorses Nihilism in the form of God and it has also shown impeccable intolerance which will make every other religion sink into opprobrium.

'Sita Sings the Blues' is a lousy and boring film, the only thing which looks good in the film is the clever use of animation which doesn't inspire storytelling in anyway. I watched the film for my own reasons and if you are planning to watch it, just because its a animated film then I would recommend other animated films which are 1000+ better than this film and if you want to watch this film for your prejudiced notions then I don't have much to say.

I could smell of left liberal excreta right from the first frame and makers of the film have helped in raising the bar level of platitudes. Ramayana is a great love story, a tragic and melancholic love story which represents emotions, love, lust, dharma, brotherhood, morality etc.. if one fails to understand it, then one reserves the right to be called as dumb, at least in the intellectual space. I would strongly suggest the readers of this post to read this brilliant post ‘Abandoning of Sita‘ on Preeksha which may act as a good start for novices to attain knowledge about the essence of Ramayana.

The writers have used their right to freedom of expression and have expressed doubts whether the sons of Sita belong to Ram or someone else and also raised the point how can Sita have a ring when she had to remove all the ornaments while leaving the kingdom - Well, for ignorant people it would seem like a brilliant point to rant upon but if the writers would have cared to at least check the customs of Hinduism, then they would have known that a spouse will always carry the sacred gifts given by his/her better half. I am quite sure that even if the writer were aware of the customs, they would have skipped them as they go against their inner thoughts. Writers like these feel that they are just using the "Freedom of Speech" and Right to express their feelings, but one thing which they chose to deliberately ignore is that they have every right to expressing their disgusting thoughts but they have no right to twist the facts.

K.Vishwanath’s ‘Swatimuthyam’ starring Kamal Hassan has a song ‘Rama Kanavemira’ and let me allow to quote few lines from the song which describes sita's swayamvaram .

In the same film in an other song 'Suvvi Suvvi', Lord Rama is criticized and Sita is praised.

Criticism was always there, but not to a point where one almost twists the facts, change the scenarios and irrational crying for proving ones point of view. Hinduism is not for the botched. Period. We have a compassionate goddess like Sita, an intimidating Kali who dances with necklace of skulls, we have prided Satyabhama and lot more. The puppets mention the various names of Goddess Sita, I would ask people to do some research on the birth and death of Lord Rama and Sita which would give the idea of Ramayana and its purpose.

Nina Paley, director of the film mentions on her blog about the recent controversy and talks about "Real Hindus" – I wonder who are they and she also talks about 'Hindutvadis', Nina Paley fails to get it right with Ramayana but succeeds when it comes to the mention of 'Hindutvadis'. I do not know who are these guys who have stopped the screening of the film. I always feel that one should not stop dumbness, it should be exploited.
