Rage of the Elite – Hindi supremacists

  • 0
Shudras humbly display scars of their rock hard hands, Warriors carry their wounds with pride, Merchants exude their acumen by saving gold, priests effuse with their chants and the jobless elite breast beat their pomposity for nothing.

At the risk of offending the elite, allow me to say that justifications given to impose Hindi on others has changed with time from normal decibel rhetoric to the cacophonic rage of the unworthy elite.
It starts with the India’s elite family, where Jawaharlal Nehru made sure that Hindi is the blue-eyed boy of Independent India snubbing other languages. It followed by official push for Urdu in Jammu and Kashmir over other local languages. If hadn’t been for the sacrifice of Potti Sreeramulu which led to division of Indian states on linguistic basis, Chahaji could have imposed elite Urdu in Telangana and Andhra because Telangana was under Nizam rule for quite some time.
Language supremacists and desert cults share some commonalities; both want to impose their beliefs citing "majority", claim civilizational superiority and divine superiority.

Allegiance:
Hindi supremacists have no problem with Urdu but have a problem with popularity of classical South Indian languages. Hindi and Urdu were adapted by the elites, and their respective supremacists were the proponents of language imposition in the sub-continent.
Pakistan imposed Urdu on its people even though spoken by less than 5% of population. Imposition of Urdu by the elites was one of the reasons for the Bengal genocide, followed by liberation of Bangladesh. Urdu was imposed by Islamists, so genocide was a natural outcome, thankfully endeavours for imposition of Hindi in India is the work of elites and supremacists who cannot be equated with Islamists.
I think it was the deep understanding and reading of Indian civilization that made many Indian intellectuals including Dr.B.R Ambedkar to support Sanskrit over Hindi. The jugalbandi of Hindi and Urdu supremacists during British Raj was a testimony to the fact that imposition of these siblings would endanger the ethos and civilization of Bharat.
Indian civilization is connected with a thin and veneer framework of “Sanathana Dharma”. Any attempts to disturb it to impose one language can lead to the same fate of Roman Empire, the pagans of Europe and some African civilizations.
Evangelism:
Evangelists, whose sole aim in India is to convert followers of “beastly” religion, can find their counterparts in language in Hindi Supremacists. Conversions by Evangelists in different parts of India has killed colloquial traditions, cultures and values - similar accusations can be levelled against Hindi supremacists.
Imposition of Hindi marginalized many North Indian languages and organic dialectics. Bhojpuri, Rajasthani and other languages which are spoken by millions of North Indians are being clubbed as “Hindi speaking” population. Current generation Hindi speaking people should listen to these questions- What happened to..
-Awadhi language, the language of Hanuman Chalisa?
-Maithili, which is closer to Hinduism than Hindi?
-Many other North Indian languages and dialectics, which are from the great Hindu/Buddhist kingdoms?
Under Mughal and British rule, the extinction of many Indian languages had started due to their monotheistic roots and intolerance for plurality. After Independence, the situation of many other languages is no better, especially in North India where the spread of Hindi swallowed the vulnerable languages and dialects which did not have the support of the elite.
Hindi spread in North India with an evangelical zeal, made many North Indian languages, especially with no script and dialects as sitting ducks who were in no position to protest against the onslaught by the infatuated elite.
Comrades:
Left loves homogeneity.
A state will find it hard to be TOTALitarian if homogeneity doesn’t exist. Homogeneity is a prerequisite for a state to achieve its totalitarian ambitions. Approval for Nanny State needs some kind of approval from its people and moral approvals can happen only in a homogenous population.
Left has the record of implementing their homogenous dreams. Soviet Union has failed in many aspects of making its population as homogenous as it can, China is pushing very hard to make the Mandarin the default language for all its provinces.
One has to admit that Hindi Supremacists have been clever in their approach or maybe they were not allowed to go full throttle due to opposition for many decades. It is not just intellectual dishonesty, but a gimmick to convince the rest of India that Hindi is “majority” language by clubbing Rajasthani, Gujarati, Bhojpuri and other North Indian languages and dialects as “Hindi”.

This attempt by Hindi Supremacists to homogenize most of North India is just for numbers, to attain some kind of advantage to push Hindi in other parts of India, especially in the South where Telugu, Tamil and Kannada are classical languages, which pose serious challenges to the superiority claims made by Hindi Supremacists.
If majority is the criteria, then Hindi Supremacists should practice Christianity on Sunday, Islam on Friday, curse idol worshippers every fortnight, and chant “death to infidels” on every full moon as Islam and Christianity are majority religions of the world.
Legitimacy:
Hindi is a language like many other Indian languages but Hindi Supremacists make many special claims for Hindi. All the claims can be debunked with moral, ethical and rational arguments, can be proved wrong with historical data.
Elites who claim superiority by dancing on the graves of other languages and dialects should admit that the Raj Thackerays & Co gain legitimacy to come with more tantrums.
The claim that Hindi has some extra copyrights on Hinduism/Sanathana Dharma while having incestuous relationship with Urdu Supremacists gives Dravidian fundamentalists more legitimacy to continue with their frivolous actions.
The more Hindi Supremacists talk about the flimsy argument of “Link Language”, the more they expose their internal confessions. Whenever they talk about the inclusiveness of Hindi language over other languages, it acts as a testimony to their inferiority complexes.
Dilution of culture and traditions happen with time and changing circumstances but it can happen rapidly when usage of language is diluted, people who are agitated about Hindi Imposition genuinely feel that the preferential treatment given to Hindi has the calibre to dilute their ancient cultures, literature and traditions.
The extraordinary statements made by Hindi Supremacists are not backed with extraordinary evidence when it comes to “Link Language”, “Nationalistic language”, “Desh Bhakti language”, ”Uniting language”.
It takes guts for every Hindi-speaking person who support imposition of Hindi to ask this question, “What was the language of my ancestors before Hindi came into existence?” which was adapted, popularized and pushed by the elite which resulted in marginalizing and destruction of other North Indian languages.
The current generation will be compelled to see their languages as a precious possession when forced to embrace Hindi either by imposition or by intelligent perpetuation. South Indian classical languages evolved and matured organically and survived for a long time. Good or bad, classical languages will not give away without a fight against Hindi imposition and eventually the rage of the elite might end up like the fate of Bhasmasura.
